Career High Weekends Across North America

A unique weekend for the team as we had a divide and conquer scenario this past weekend.  Jess Pettis would take aim at SX glory in Seattle WA., while Marco Cannella would continue with round 4 of the Rockstar Triple Crown AX series in Sarnia ON.

Jess was going to be dealing with gruesome conditions as the weather for the open stadium race had been talked about all week as the rain was forecasted for days upon days of rain including race day.   The weather man was not wrong this time!   With a shortened schedule providing only 1 practice / qualifier per group to save the track, and bikes it was important to get out early and set a good time.    That is exactly what Pettis did logging the 2nd fastest time in his group (first group to hit the track) solidifying his spot in the night show.   As the track got slower for the 2nd group, his time stood up and would set him up with a great gate pick for the heat race and an amazing feat of qualifying 2nd overall in his class.

The heat race would be a true test of survival and unfortunately going down in the first turn, and another crash after remounting would mean that Pettis would have to turn more laps with a trip to the LCQ.   Thankfully a great start in the LCQ as only the top 4 advances, would see Jess ride with composure and mistake free to finish 2nd and earn the right to the main event.   This would be the first appearance in his career at an AMA SX event.

A top 10 start in the shortened main event helped clear some of the carnage of the opening laps.  A small mistake early on would drop him to 17th where he managed to stay for the remainder of the event.  A great accomplishment and a check box few get to complete.

Closer to home while sitting in a tie for 4th overall in the AX series Marco would look to assert himself as a podium rider.   From the first practice he was on pace setting the quickest time in practice and 2nd quickest time in qualifying.

Lining up in heat 1 would see Marco round the first couple laps in 3rd, where he patiently let the race unfold.   As the laps wound down he made 2 quick passes and took the win assuring himself of a great gate pick in the main.

The main saw a mid pack start, where again in the opening chaotic laps Marco just settled in and let the race unfold.   Then one by one he made passes each lap until he was up to 2nd place.   Unfortunately for him series points leader Shawn Maffenbeier had taken the holeshot and disappeared quickly from the pack.   With no chance of catching him Marco rode smartly to ride the remaining laps mistake free and take the best finish of his young pro career with the second step on the podium.

With his finish Marco has cemented himself alone in 3rd place only 3 points back of second with the final two rounds of AX racing this coming weekend.   He will be joined by his teammate Pettis as they look to finish off the first portion of the Rockstar Triple Crown with some wins to head to the outdoors with the momentum.

Follow the team live this weekend from Barrie ON for racing both Friday and Saturday night.
