Taming the Beast….

Arguably the hottest and toughest race of the year is in the deep sand of Gopher Dunes in Tillsonburg ON.  This year temperatures with humidity were in the high 38’s (that’s over 100 for our American friends), and the sand was as soft as ever.

A great spectator turnout for Gopher was on hand to watch some great racing, and a fantastic team overall result for our boys in Blue!

From the first qualifier Jess Pettis established himself as one of the guys to beat all day as he has all season long, grabbing top qualifying honours.   Behind him local Hayden Halstead who was feeling a little under the weather would round out the top 5 heading into the motos.

When the gate dropped it would be Pettis rocketing out to the Royal Distributing Holeshot and would never look back as he made the sand look smooth pulling away to over a 10 sec lead on his way to the checkers.  His other two teammates would battle the entire moto in 7th and 8th and Halstead would get the nod over the rookie Cannella at the line.

Moto 2 started the same for Pettis as he again grabbed the holeshot and took off like a rabbit sprinting from the field.  He was consistently 3-4 secs a lap faster than anyone and built of a 40 sec margin of victory at the checkers.  His teammates with better starts for this moto ran 3rd and 5th with Cannella in front of Halstead.   Marco looking for a pass for 2nd would have a scary moment as he hit the ground hard resulting in a damaged bike that he nursed to the finish for 8th.   Halstead would have his career best moto finish with a 4th showed again to everyone that he belongs at the front!

Overall for the day:

1st Jess Pettis

5th Hayden Halstead

8th Marco Cannella

In the championship battle, Kawasaki’s Shawn Maffenbeier would suffer a mechanical in moto 2 and with Jess’s great weekend he would regain the coveted red plate with 3 rounds to go!

Overall MX points standings: (6 of 9 rounds complete)

1st Jess Pettis +8 points

5th Marco Cannella -47 points

8th Hayden Halstead -103 points
